Achron's most popular composition, "Hebrew Melody", appears in over 50 YouTube videos.

His compositions have been championed by many of the world's greatest violinists, including Jascha Heifetz, who is said to have played nearly everything Achron wrote for that instrument.

Arnold Schoenberg called him "one of the most under-rated modern composers"; Jascha Heifetz considered him "one of our foremost modern composers."

In less than a year, the Joseph Achron Society received e-mails from conductors, performers, scholars, librarians, administrators, and publishers in over six countries. Our website has been accessed by google searches in nearly 30 languages, and we are the topic of several news articles.

We see an opportunity and a need.

And yet, aside from the 50+ videos of "Hebrew Melody", almost none of Achron's other compositions appear on YouTube.  Most of today's performers and scholars don't seem to know his name.  Most of his works have never been published and are thus rarely - if ever - performed.  Scholarship devoted to Achron consists mostly of a few book chapters and one 50-page dissertation.

We are fulfilling that need.

The Joseph Achron Society was founded in May 2010 to promote Achron's brilliant legacy by publishing his unpublished works, recording his unrecorded music, and promoting new scholarship and performances.  We are already making a difference!

We wasted no time in creating the first published edition of Joseph Achron's Third Violin Concerto.  At the request of Germany's Brandenburg Symphony Orchestra, and with the financial support of the Washington-based Pro Musica Hebraica Foundation, we sought out the manuscripts in three cities, edited them, typeset them, proofread them, engaged a scholar to write an historical introduction, and finally made this work available world-wide. Commissioned by Jascha Heifetz in 1933, this work had never been published or performed since its premiere (with Otto Klemperer conducting the Los Angeles Philharmonic and Achron himself as soloist in 1939.)  In May 2011, the Brandenburg Symphony used our edition to present the first performance in over 70 years, and the audience loved it!  The performance was covered favorably in the press, and we are now discussing the possibilities of continued performances.  An audio clip of this historic performance is now available on our YouTube channel.

The Joseph Achron Society is a hub for international interest in Joseph Achron.  Within a few months of our founding, a Japanese violin-maker contacted us in search of a photo of Achron to include in the "Famous String Players Calendar" that he produces every year.  A South African librarian asked about literature on Achron's life. A Polish-Lithuanian cultural organization wanted to organize a concert of Achron's music in his birthplace. A Spanish violinist requested the manuscripts to Achron's rare concerto cadenzas. A Dutch pianist sent us his fascinating arrangements of Achron's music for piano trio. In 2012, we helped the Båstad Chamber Music Festival in Sweden acquire the rare sheet music to Achron's delightful "Children's Suite" for clarinet, string quartet, and piano, for a feature performance in their June Festival.
